Policy and Legal Framework Component

Farmers' capacity to care for the land is affected by the social, economic and political milieu in which they live. This DMP component addresses:

• Macro, trade and agricultural sector policies that affect the dryland areas, including the consequences of trade liberalization and globalization;

• A range of local institutional issues, including property rights and incentives for collective management of rangeland resources;

• Returns to sustainable development investments in dryland areas;

• How livelihood strategies change in response to desertification, seeking policies that might mitigate negative effects on  people and communities;

• The study of successes and failures to identify valuable lessons; and

• The sharing of information and knowledge with policy makers to inform ongoing policy debates.
