The Desert Margins Program is a broad alliance across Sub-Saharan
Africa. It crystallized in response to world commitment to combat
land degradation and poverty, reflected in the United Nations
Conventions to Combat Desertification and protect Biodiversity, and
Framework to mitigate Climate Change. The Desert Margins Program is
implemented by the United Nations Environment Programme (UNEP) and
executed by the International Crops Research Institute for the
Semi-Arid Tropics (ICRISAT). Financing and in-kind support for the
DMP is provided by the nine participating countries; the Global
Environment Fund (GEF); a number of other development investors (see
below); and the partner institutions themselves.
